Active Byzantine monastery built in the 17th century also housing a museum of rare religious works and local products produced by the monks there. Please be properly dressed when visiting churches/monasteries.

The Monastery of Agia Triada has a distinctive façade with Doric columns, but the elements of Renaissance architecture remind us that the monastery was built by the Cretan monks Ieremias and Lavrentios, of the Venetian Orthodox Tzagarolos family. Tzagarolon Monastery is a Patriarchal - Stavropegiac monastery. It is now one of the most important monasteries in Crete, with huge influence on education in the island. The Akrotiri Peninsula, just a few kilometers away from the center of Chania, is a great place to spend a day exploring the region. One of the must-see places in Akrotiri is the Holy Monastery of Agia Triada. Located at the end of a road lined with centennial trees, a flock of stone stairs leads your way up to the main courtyard of the monastery. Once inside, pay a visit to the museum and to the Baroque church but don’t overlook the magnificent gardens with fruit trees and gorgeous flowers. Climb all the way to the roof to admire the bell tower and devote a few minutes to visit the wine cellar and taste some great wines produced in the place.

The monastery of Agia Triada of Tzagarolon is one of the richest and most beautiful monasteries in Crete. It is built near the airport of Chania, in the position Tzobomylos of the Cape Melecha and at the foothills of Stavros Mount. The distance from Chania is only 15km. The monastery was built by the Venetian nobles Jeremiah and Lawrence Tzagarolo. Jeremiah was a famous scholar of his era with rich education and was a friend of the Patriarch of Alexandria, Meletios Pigas. Jeremiah himself was a candidate for Patriarch of Constantinople. Moreover, Jeremiah designed and built the monastery complex of the monastery, being affected by the architect Sebastiano Serlio from Verona, Italy. The monastery today hosts a small museum with various pictures and icons. The most important are the 12th century cloth for covering the altar, the icons of St. John the Theologian (16th century), St. Nicholas (17th century) and the icons of the painter Skordilis: the Enthroned Christ, Living Spring and the Second Coming (1635-1645).
